Well, my hope is to use this space to explore mobile learning applications in the context of my overall framework of "inspiring innovation" through integration.

I admit it, I am enamored with the technology at times, but I always try to frame it in the context of human performance and organizational objectives for businesses, schools, military, etc.

I like to focus on the potential for performance support applications and particularly, active learning where the mobile device user is in charge of the learning or knowledge transfer. Most intriguing is the notion that we can all be mobile producers, not just mobile consumers.

So I will be posting on mobile technology innovations and techniques, but through the lens of human performance and business results. Enjoy!

PenThanks to Sam Adkins from Ambient Insight for sending me a link about the new mobile computing platform LiveScribe which launched on May 30th.

This is a new implementation of the Anoto technology which connects the pen and paper to a digital device and converts handwriting into digital form.

I first saw a prototype of the Anoto C-Pen at Comdex in the late 90's. In 2002 Logitech® launched their digital pen, Logitech® ioTMPersonal Digital Pen. They are being used today in some hospitals to capture the bed charts in a digital format so that the information can be accessed remotely by doctors with appropriate access.

Then in 2005 LeapFrog announced the FLY pentop computer, directed at young teens. LeapFrog added some interesting capabilities and brought the pen price down to under $100, but the necessary paper was again expensive.

Now LiveScribe has added a recorder to the pen as

languagesMuch of the recent activity in mobile learning has been in language training. Just this week Nokia announced a large initiative in China to tap into English lessons, test-prep training, and other courses from New Oriental Education & Technology Group, a leading Chinese educational company. "The idea of mobile learning is that it will allow students of all ages to access course materials through a mobile phone, maximizing time by providing learning on the go," said Michael Yu, New Oriental's chief executive. "Would-be mobile learners can buy one of the newer Nokia models with educational programs already installed, and they can also download courses from Mobiledu and New Oriental's online-learning site, Koolearn.com. The project is not the first time that courses have been offered via cellphone, but it's part of what is sure to be a growing trend."

In Sweden Learning-by-SMS.com announced that "you can learn a new language just by using your mobile phone, we'll send you daily themed phrases via text messages so you can keep on learning wherever you are." &quot

We hope that you will add us to your RSS feeds, let us know what you are doing in the area of mobile learning, and make suggestions for what we should have on this site and how it should better be organized.
