ImageIsle of Wight County Schools spent more than $55,000 over the summer to hook students up with the latest technological gadgets to aid learning.

If a student misses several days of school, third-grade teacher Haley Hanson of Hardy Elementary School can give the youngster access to the exact classroom lectures missed via podcast — by giving the student a pair of ear buds and an Apple iTouch. The hand-held instrument is similar to an iPhone (without the phone capability) that will allow students to watch and listen to classes they missed.

Fellow Hardy Elementary teacher Jackie Van Buren can download an assignment from the Internet and display it on her new SMART Board — an electronic touch-screen blackboard that looks like a giant computer screen — rather than printing out copies or writing lessons on the blackboard. Her students will be able to use their hands or special pens to answer questions and solve math problems interactively.
