Abilene Christian University officials don’t just expect next fall’s freshman class to break this year’s record. They expect next year’s class to max out the school’s capacity.

“We do know we will have to cut off applications because we simply don’t have room for more than 1,050 freshmen in the entering class,” said Buck James, associate vice president for enrollment management at ACU. “Based on everything we see, we’re not going to have any problem hitting that number.”

There were 955 entering freshmen at ACU in 2008 and 978 this year. As of the Nov. 1 early application deadline, there were 2,390 applications compared to 1,582 by last year’s early application deadline.

The 51 percent increase is something James said is in line with university’s goals.

James attributed the number of students applying early to the recognition ACU has received from its mobile learning initiative and rankings in national publications.
