Representatives from an assortment of educational institutions converged on the Abilene Christian University campus Monday to glean insight about how to use mobile devices in their various academic realms.

A chiropractic college, the Air Force and a public school system from San Antonio were all among those who sent participants to the Connected Open House Monday.

They heard from students, faculty and technology directors who talked about ACU’s Mobile Learning Initiative, which has given an Apple iPhone or iPod touch to every underclassmen and the faculty who teach them. All students will get a device next year, which means they will have Internet access in their pockets.

Peter Rayson from Birmingham City University in England traveled the farthest for the Open House. His university has started a pilot program but may give all 30,000 students hand-held electronic devices in the future.
